In a notable shift, GamStop, the UK's national online gambling self-exclusion scheme, has witnessed a surge in registrations among younger users, particularly those aged 16-24 and 25-34. A significant trend emerging from this data is the increasing popularity of the six-month self-exclusion option among this demographic.

Fiona Palmer, CEO of GamStop, has acknowledged this trend, suggesting that younger consumers are increasingly using GamStop as a tool for a break from gambling. This shift towards shorter self-exclusion periods could be a reflection of a preference for flexibility while still taking a break from gambling.

According to the data, among users aged 16-24, 39% chose the six-month exclusion, 26% picked the one-year option, and 35% selected the five-year option. For users aged 25-34, the figures are slightly different, with 27% opting for the six-month exclusion, 26% for the one-year option, and a notable 47% for the five-year option. However, among those aged 45 and above, over 60% selected the five-year option.

This trend aligns with growing awareness and promotion of responsible gambling tools, including affordability checks and national self-exclusion schemes being emphasized in the industry and by regulators. Regulatory frameworks and gambling operators are responding by integrating better responsible gambling features, including easier access to varied self-exclusion durations, to encourage safer play and appeal to a younger demographic that may be more tech-savvy but also more cautious about prolonged restrictions.

Chris Pond, who has extensive experience in financial services, public policy, and nonprofit leadership, is set to become the new chair of GamStop in September, succeeding Jenny Watson CBE who has been in the role since GamStop's early days. Pond's appointment comes as GamStop continues to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of its growing user base.

Palmer encourages younger consumers to view GamStop as a preventative tool alongside other solutions, offering them breathing space to regain control. As the landscape of online gambling continues to evolve, it is clear that GamStop's commitment to promoting responsible gambling and integrating advanced compliance solutions remains steadfast.
